Brown County's Sweetest Success Story
Sara Monnett Is Baking Something Special in Brown County
One of the things I love most about Brown County is that talented people choose to build something special here. Few examples are sweeter than Offbeet Bakery in downtown Nashville.
The owner, Sara Monnett, is one of those rare people whose technical skill is matched by genuine passion for her craft. I first met Sara several years ago when she catered my daughter's wedding reception at The Hen House while working with Bird's Nest Café. Even then, it was obvious she possessed exceptional talent and a level of professionalism that set her apart.
Not long afterward, word began to spread that Sara was planning to start her own bakery. She built a loyal following one customer at a time, selling her baked goods at local events, farmers markets, and Christkindl Market. Every appearance seemed to generate more fans eager to get their hands on her latest creations.
When Sara opened Offbeet Bakery in the former Holly Shop space, Brown County gained something it had long needed: a true artisan bakery. The space itself feels like a cozy European bakery and coffee shop, welcoming guests with the aroma of fresh bread, pastries, and coffee.
Offbeet's menu showcases Sara's incredible range. Her sourdough and focaccia breads are outstanding. Her Danish pastries, pies, cookies, and cakes are beautifully crafted and consistently delicious. Her signature cookies have become local legends—thick, rich creations that are almost the size of hockey pucks.
Sara's decorated cakes are works of art. I've ordered them for special occasions at Plāhaus, including a birthday celebration and a honeymoon stay. One particularly memorable cake featured vanilla bean cake with buttercream frosting accompanied by house-made lemon curd and blueberry compote. It was as beautiful as it was delicious.
What I admire most is Sara's artistic approach. Many of her cakes feature elegant monochromatic designs where texture, form, and sculptural detail take center stage. They feel less like desserts and more like edible works of art.
She also offers vegan options and continually experiments with new creations while maintaining the quality and craftsmanship that have become her hallmark.
Brown County is fortunate to have many talented artists, makers, and entrepreneurs. Sara Monnett belongs firmly in that group. Offbeet Bakery isn't simply a place to grab a pastry—it's one of those local businesses that helps make Brown County the unique and special place so many of us are proud to call home.
